GW8 plan: Mbeumo, then save the second transfer
Szoboszlai to Mbeumo projects 64.10 points, up 2.31 on holding. Keep Evanilson, captain Saka and retain the second free transfer.
Our GW8 plan is Szoboszlai → Mbeumo. Keep Evanilson and save the second free transfer. Keep Saka and De Cuyper after last week’s moves. Szoboszlai’s hamstring absence makes midfield the first transfer decision. Mbeumo projects 5.86 points against Bournemouth and lifts this squad from 61.79 to 64.10 expected points, captain included. That route needs £1.0m above Szoboszlai’s selling value. Tavernier is the cheaper alternative and releases £0.6m.
The deadline is Friday 23 October, 19:30 Denmark time (17:30 UTC). This is the Wednesday preview, before the remaining European matches and Friday fitness news.

Gains compare complete legal starting XIs and captain choices against holding the same fifteen. Three- and five-week gains discount each later week by 5%. Prices and the three-per-club limit are included; cash needed uses recorded purchase prices. These are static squad comparisons, with no points assigned to the flexibility of a saved transfer or future moves.
Two free transfers are available. Hold both and carry three into GW9; use one and carry two; use both and carry one. Replacing Sánchez alone adds no starting-XI points while Raya remains the preferred goalkeeper. A second transfer needs to improve the starters enough to justify using that flexibility.
Two-transfer alternative: Szoboszlai → Mbeumo and Evanilson → Gonzalo requires £1.1m extra cash. It projects 66.12 points this week: 2.02 more than the Mbeumo-only move, with another 6.10 expected points across the five-week static comparison. Gonzalo has seven starts, 595 minutes and 3.46 expected goals in the current official feed. If cash is tighter, Tavernier plus Gonzalo projects 64.77 and releases £0.5m. The chosen plan uses one transfer on Mbeumo and retains Evanilson. It gives up 2.02 points of immediate model expectation to preserve the second transfer. That flexibility has no assigned points value in this comparison.
The numerical search also finds Gibbs-White → Mbeumo, with Evanilson → Gonzalo, at the same 66.12 and no extra cash required. That route leaves Szoboszlai unavailable and depends on how Gibbs-White’s return develops. Prefer removing the confirmed injured midfielder when the budget allows. The search covers a screened candidate pool, not every possible transfer in FPL.
The starting XI
After Szoboszlai → Mbeumo, 3-4-3: Raya; Bobby Thomas, Virgil, N. Williams; Saka, Cole Palmer, Mbeumo, E. Le Fée; Thiago, Calvert-Lewin, Evanilson.
Captain Saka; vice-captain Palmer. Outfield bench: De Cuyper, Gibbs-White, Tarkowski. Reserve goalkeeper: Sánchez.
If Gibbs-White is confirmed fit, the one-transfer fit scenario uses a 3-5-2 with him starting and Evanilson first substitute, followed by De Cuyper and Tarkowski.
For the two-transfer alternative: start Gonzalo in Evanilson’s place; the rest of that XI, bench order and armbands stay the same. If Gibbs-White is confirmed fit, the fit scenario starts him ahead of Le Fée, with Le Fée first substitute, then De Cuyper and Tarkowski.
If holding, 4-3-3: Raya; Bobby Thomas, Virgil, N. Williams, De Cuyper; Saka, Palmer, Le Fée; Thiago, Calvert-Lewin, Evanilson. Outfield bench: Gibbs-White, Tarkowski, Szoboszlai; Sánchez is the reserve goalkeeper. The same armbands apply.
De Cuyper’s reported midfield role supports keeping him. The current projection puts him at 3.55, behind Williams (3.87) and Thomas (4.05). That is a small selection margin to review after Brighton’s Thursday match, rather than a reason to sell.
What could change the decision?
Saka leads Palmer by only 0.33 points (7.35 against 7.02). Their simulated 10th–90th percentile ranges are both 2–15 points. Wednesday’s Arsenal workload matters before locking captaincy.
Gibbs-White remains doubtful. In the explicit fit/out stress tests, the Mbeumo move’s GW8 gain ranges from 2.15 to 2.36 points. A fit Gibbs-White may change the formation and bench. Official availability percentages are not calibrated starting probabilities.
The base horizon carries today’s Szoboszlai absence forward. If he instead returns from GW9 with a 90% starting prior and 85 conditional minutes, Mbeumo’s five-week gain becomes +6.05, versus +7.42 in the base case; Tavernier’s becomes +4.71. This is a return scenario, not a medical forecast. Cherki and Foden retain substantial minutes risk; recent European returns do not remove it. Check Le Fée and Brighton’s Thursday workload too.
